1. Weirdly intrusive pictures of your children that you know damn well they would not want the whole world to be looking at if they had the choice/awareness about it.
2. Passive-aggressive posts about the problems you’re having with a significant other.
3. Even more passive-aggressive statuses about how you don’t really care what anyone thinks, even though you are clearly dedicating the energy to write a mini-rant on the subject in public view.
4. Racist and sexist memes you got from some terrible fan page.
5. Updates on a really banal meal that you’re eating because you have literally nothing else to talk about. (Hint: If your first reaction is to tell everyone that your re-heated pasta goes nice with some fresh greens, it probably means you should just take the evening off from telling people about your life.)
6. Humblebrags that are so clearly trying to be actual…
Combine all ingredients together in a carafe or pitcher. Add vodka to each individual serving to keep mix fresh!
Fruit Purees for Bellini Bar
Fresh blueberries (I used organic)
Fresh raspberries (I used organic)
Fresh mango (I used organic)
In a blender, puree each fruit separately and strain through a fine sieve into separate containers. To make bellinis, pour a small amount of pureed fruit into the bottom of a champagne flute and top with champagne. I didn’t think that the fresh fruit needed any added sugar, but it is nice to have some simple syrup available if anyone wants a little added sweetness. Any fruit can be used for these! Get creative – strawberries, blackberries, etc.
As I mentioned in my last post, I hosted a brunch for some of my lady friends. I started my day with a spin class to get my blood flowing and energy up. When I came home, I began the final preparations.
I am hosting a brunch for my lady friends this afternoon. I am so looking forward to entertaining again, that the hardest part was waiting for the day to get here. Seriously, it was like waking up on Christmas morning. My eyes were open at 5:30 and I forced myself to stay for another two hours! But the benefit of planning ahead is, well, having time to plan ahead.
The key to pulling off a party with panache is getting as much done ahead of time as you can. The first party we threw at our new joint was a last minute affair, so prep basically occurred within hours of kickoff time. Which was fine. Today’s Friday Favorites post is animal-themed. It is no secret that I want a dog. In the past, I had craved a large-and-in-charge pup (think Rottweiler, Bull Mastiff, Newfoundland). Those expectations were scaled back a bit when I realized that I just didn’t have the space or yard for something that big, and probably wouldn’t any time soon.
As the years have passed, my wants and desires have changed and at this point I’ll take just about anything. That french bulldog with his giant bat ears? Want! The Yorkie staring at me with its silver and gold mane? Make it mine! The pug making googly eyes at me through the internet? Give it here! Seriously. Anything.
And because I still haven’t acquired a cuddly puppy, I seem to be making up for it in different ways. Any animal-themed home accessory I come across gets a swipe of the debit card. It’s not quite at DEFCON1 yet, but I have to watch myself to make sure I’m not turning into that crazy lady with stuffed animal “friends” covering every inch of my bed.
With that said, I do think that a few animal accents can really liven up a place and give a fun vibe to guests. Here are a few of my favorites… I promise, I don’t own them all. Yet.

One of the most important parts of a good party is the alcohol. It’s such a bummer when your drink of choice runs out or you begin making another cocktail only to find that there are no more ice or mixers left. It’s definitely best to over-buy when it comes to the booze than risk running dry. So how much is enough?
As a general rule of thumb:
Each guest will drink 2 drinks in the first hour and 1 drink per hour thereafter
A 1-liter bottle of liquor will result in ~22 mixed drinks
A 750-ml bottle of wine/champagne yields 6 glasses
If you are mixing beer, wine, and cocktails, estimate about 1 bottle of wine per 8 guests, and 2 beers per person, knowing that not everyone will drink them
Plan on 1/2 lime, 1/2 lemon, and 2 cherries per guest
For the last two and a half years, my fiancé and I have been living in a 390 square foot apartment. Now before you wonder how the heck we did it, let me explain that it was located right on the beach in Santa Monica, California. A backyard as beautiful as this can help you forget about a lack of space:
One thing that I truly missed while living there (besides a garbage disposal and a room other than the bathroom to escape to) was the space to entertain friends and family. I grew up in a family that cooked and ate together. On weeknights it was Mom cooking us dinner and then waiting for Dad to get home before we sat down to eat. On weekends it was the two of them cooking and grilling together while listening to “steak music” (jazz that was always associated with a more elaborate, relaxed weekend meal). For me, food always brought people together and became a way to express love and gratitude. During the week, I eat a pretty clean and simple diet, but when it comes time to share the experience with others, I like to create a special ambiance with special food. Continue reading →
