Alternate title – Friday Favorites: Saturday Edition
Alternate title 2 – Friday Favorites: It Was the Longest Day of the Year and I Still Couldn’t Get a Blog Post Up
Now that summer is officially here, how about some Favorites to get us in the mood? Summer to me means lighter fare, fun atmosphere, and fresh flavors. Let’s get started, shall we?
While getting our apartment set up, Numero Uno and I went to the local hardware store to purchase a simple outdoor furniture set and gardening supplies. In the process, we found other goodies (shocker). We came home with this beverage cooler and it has been providing chilled refreshments to our guests ever since. Before a party, we buy a large bag of ice and are able to keep beers cold out on the porch without taking up valuable fridge space.
I’m a big proponent of fresh flowers in general, but in the summer when so many beautiful flowers are in their peak season, having these brighten up a space is so lovely. My current favorite are Lisianthus (also called Lisis at our farmers’ market). I’ve seen these paper-thin flowers in purple, pink, and white, and they last FOREVER. Some flowers tend to die after only a few days, but these stay perky and fragrant for at least a week and a half.
I’m not sure what about mason jars screams summer to me. Maybe it’s that they’re southern and it’s always hot there? I don’t know, but either way, there you have it. Summer in a jar. For NU’s birthday this year, my parents got him the mason jar martini shaker. The glasses (set of 12) were a Christmas gift from my parents years ago. Nothing like a good tequila soda with a wedge of lime in a mason jar!
NU had seen this iPod/iPad speaker system on huge sale for Father’s Day at Brookstone. I picked it up the other day and already I’m in love. The sound is great and there is even a waterproof remote control (still tentative to actually use it in the shower…). The best part? The stand flips up into a handle so that you can hold it like a boom box (on your shoulder while riding a beach cruiser, of course)! How much does that scream summer? Good idea or great idea?!
Finally, I’ll leave you all with a refreshing summer recipe. I haven’t made this in years, but you can bet that it will pop up on a menu this summer. This is as easy as it gets. Combine one tub of cool wHip, with two 6-ounce containers of any fruit-flavored yogurt of your choice, pour into a prepared graham cracker crust (homemade or store-bought) and toss into the freezer. Freeze until firm (4ish hours?) and then enjoy this cool, refreshing treat. (Lemonade… that cool, refreshing drink… Anyone get that reference??)
What are your summer favorites? Let’s hear ’em!
